Eyes and Skins

This piece was interesting and provided the audience with a thought provoking performance. I did think the overall effect was very cliche and I would have liked to know more about the reasoning behind it. I feel like if I were to have known this reason it would of helped me to appreciate the piece even more.I don’t usually like dancers used as pieces of an artshow.I feel that they hold a stronger presence in videos, but I enjoyed what they brought to the performance.

Gaugin

The Gaugin pieces at the Seattle Art Museum were one of my favorites that I’ve see there in awhile. The colors he chose to use and the way he painted his figures was very beautiful to me. It interested me the skin tone he used on his people, in real life it seems like it would of been an extreme shade, but taken in context with the rest of the colors and his style he used in the paintings I felt like it made perfect sense. I am not really a big fan of wood work, I can appreciate it but it doesn’t amaze me the way that paintings can and thats probably because I dont know the amount of work that goes into something like that having never done something like that. I did like the consistency in all of his wood pieces, they all looked like he had done them, they weren’t random and all seemed to speak together as a whole even tho they were all single pieces. All in all, I can really connect with the pieces I say in this show in multiple ways. The amount of detail he used in his paintings, the techniques he used to draw figues, and the unique sense of all of his wood works will stick with me.

Samantha Van PamelDripping Gold
I have always loved working with paper and other materials to make flowers, petal by petal. Before In the past, I have only used this technique for a couple flowers every now and then, but I decided for my independent project to develop a larger piece solely based on those flowers. I chose to use the delicate dusted gold leaf to show the softer side of nature hopefully emphasizing how beautiful nature can be.I incorporated the wax to show that, in turn, nature is also sturdy and these two opposites work together to keep everything balanced.

SuttonBeresCuller

I thought that the lecture held by sutton/beres/culler was one of the most interesting lectures I’ve listened to at Cornish so far. I felt like they did a great job explaining everything from their process, to their ideas and even the humor and why those chose to use it in some of their pieces. All of their pieces were so well thought and and beautifully constructed that it was hard to now be in awe of what they create. Also I thought that the projects that they came up with were so unique and I found that really inspiring. For instance the “trailer park”. I also really liked how they took normal everyday things and placed them in a certain environment or used them in a certain way that made us look at them or think of them differently, I think its amazing when someone can do that with their art. Over all I really enjoyed their lecture, I am very excited to see what they come up with for the space in Cornish and I will definitely be checking in from time to time to see how its going.
